Charles "Dick" Steele Obituary

Charles Richard “Dick” Steele, 81, of Keokuk, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at his home in Keokuk.

Dick was born May 27, 1941, to Richard John & Rosa Viola (Barthalamew) Steele at the family’s home in Keokuk. In April of 1959, Dick was united in marriage to Marla J. Huston. They had four children together and later divorced. On December 5, 2006, Dick was united in marriage to Alice A. Garrison. She survives.

Dick spent his working career all over the United States. He started out as an apprentice plumber in Keokuk and also was a project manager at the Keosippi Mall and project manager superintendent at Dial outside of Fort Madison, Iowa. Dick worked at the Orlando Airport and also the Space Center in Florida. He was in charge of hazardous waste at Midway Island, Hawaii and was involved with a million-dollar trash to energy prototype at Brenderson. Before retirement, he worked at the shutdowns of nuclear power plants.

Dick loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and NASCAR. He enjoyed writing many articles that were published on the opinion pages of both the Daily Gate City and Hawkeye newspapers and he loved to travel.

Left to grieve are his loving wife, Alice; six children: Tammy Jean Steele of Colorado, Kurt Allan (fiancé Maria) Steele of Keokuk, Matthew Richard Steele of Keokuk, Michael Earnest (Bobbi) Page of Keokuk, Mary Lynne Kindhart of Keokuk and Jeffrey S. (Tammy) Page of Mississippi; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many good friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and daughter Michelle Anette Steele.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, March 10, 2023 at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk. Memorials may be made out to P.A.W. Animal Shelter.
