How Did We Do?

Mary Ellen Morris, formerly of Keokuk, passed away Monday, March 16, 2020 in Kirkwood, Missouri. She was born in Alexandria, Missouri on February 8, 1938. Mary graduated from Wyaconda Missouri High School and then moved to Keokuk where she spent the majority of her life with Bob. She moved to the St. Louis area in the fall of 2019 to be close to her granddaughters.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Robert (Rocky) Morris, her parents, Jim and Nettie Murphy, and her brother Bill. She is survived by her two sons and their families: Steve (Lynn) Morris and their daughters Allison and fiancé Todd Mannion, Lauren and her fiancé Jacob Crenshaw and Madison; Scott (Hsiu Ling) Morris and their children Esther and her husband Jay and Titus and one brother; Richard.

Mary lived in Keokuk from the late 50s until the fall of 2019. She had multiple employers over the years mostly related to accounting. Mary worked for General Mills, Super Oil Company, The Mississippi Queen and AMI Pipe and Supply where she retired in 2018. She was also the long time book keeper for Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mary was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist church, where she and Bob were the second couple to be married in the newly built church on Plank road in November of 1962. She sang in the church choir for decades, retiring from singing only a few years ago. She was actively involved in the churches college scholarship committee as well as their annual rummage sale to raise money for school supplies for children in need in the Keokuk area. Over the years she was a member of PEO Chapter IG. Mary was also an avid sports fan, most notably the St. Louis Cardinals.

Mary and Bob were very involved in their children's and grandchildren's lives. They loved to travel with the family and attend all the key events throughout high school and college.

Visitation for Mary Morris will be held at the DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center on Friday, March 20, 2020 from 5 pm to 8 pm with a private family graveside service on Saturday morning, March 21, 2020. In light of the current COVID-19 crisis the family would like to pass along the message that they understand those who are elderly or immune compromised may not be able to attend the visitation.

On behalf of the residents at Richmond Terrace in St. Louis where Mary lived this past year, she will be missed. She will be remembered by her loving smile and sparkling eyes. She hid her pain well and was so proud of her family. May she rest in peace! Linda M.

Mary was in my brother, Kenner’s, class at WHS. She was also a very good friend of mine. We sang in a trio and we played the flute together in the band. She always had a smile and we laughed a lot. I lived on Plank Rd. and whenever I saw her we shared lots of memories. She was so proud of her boys and grandchildren. My cousin, David Desvaux in California, said he and Mary were “buddies” and often rode around together after church while in HS. Your grandmother, Nettie, was a very close friend of my mother {Phyllis Hutchinson) and grandmother (Virgie Desvaux) in Wyaconda. They all attended the Christian Church and made lots of salads and desserts for church dinners. You were blessed with wonderful parents and grandparents!

Dear Steve, Scott & families,
Our condolences on your Mother’s passing. It was joy to get to know her and your Dad when John was pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church. Your Mom was a dear friend; we very much appreciated her support as well as her dedication and work for the church.
We are sorry that we can’t attend Friday’s visitation. Considering the circumstances, we thought it better not to possibly transmit anything from Johnson County.
May God’s Comfort and Grace surround you all,
Peg and John Raab
