Thomas “Tom” K. Barnes, 86, of Keokuk, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at his home in Keokuk.
Tom was born on November 28, 1934, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Howard A. and Ruth E. Barnes. On June 8, 1956, he was united in marriage to his wife of 65 years, Janet Hutchens, in Keokuk, Iowa, who surrounded his life with her love and joy of helping others. She survives.
Tom graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Western Illinois, and his Master’s degree from Truman State University. Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army as a surveyor in several Eastern countries, including Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1956. Tom was employed as a surveyor and engineer for Hancock County, Illinois, a design engineer for Amana Refrigeration, and taught Industrial Arts from 1967 to 1994, retiring from Keokuk Community Schools. He was a member of ISEA – NEA (Retired), American Legion Post #41, VFW 3508, and AARP.
Tom is survived by his wife Janet of Keokuk; sons: Keith (Chris) Barnes of Keokuk, Iowa, Kent Barnes of Keokuk, Kevin Todd Barnes of Bloomington, Illinois, Kurt (Casey) Barnes of Keokuk, Iowa; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10 am on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Post #41 and the United States Army. Friends and family may gather at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home at 9:30 am on Monday for a procession to the cemetery.
